Beekeepers undergo training |
John Waweru Kamau, Beekeeper |
An example of a beekeeper trained at Baraka Agricultural College is John Waweru Kamau (pictured above right) of Molo in Kenya. John is married with 4 children and lives on a one and a half acre farm. John started in beekeeping 3 years ago when he observed an old man in their village who kept bees using traditional methods. John has five locally made box hives (fixed comb).
In 2004 John harvested honey and sold it for 1,040Ksh ($14). With this money he purchased tin sheets to make a simple family grain store. John is optimistic and wants to expand his beekeeping. In 2004 John was assisted with basic beekeeping training for one week at Baraka Agricultural College, Molo, Kenya along with basic equipment such as a smoker, beesuit, hive tool and bee brush.
Get in touch with the short courses coordinator at Baraka if you would like to sponsor a beekeeper on a short course. Payments for courses can be made through the college website at the following address: http://www.sustainableag.org
