Is bee Keeping a viable venture?

Postby wawerujk on Wed Aug 12, 2009 11:12 pm

Hello,

Could someone in this forum advice on the viability of bee keeping as an investment? I live in Kenya and we are facing draught, deforestation and all the calamities including rivers drying up.

I would like a very objective answer on the Return On Investment from bee keeping projects. Importantly, is there ready market for bee products and how many hives should I invest in to at least break even in the worst case scenario - like in draught seasons. I am considering setting up some hives in Kajiado North, which is a semi arid area. I partly read about bee forage and am there was an indication that Aloe Vera Barbadensis's flowers are a good attraction for bees thus high quality honey. Could someone in the bee keeping support this? What forage is recommended for the area (Kajiado) besides honey acacia. Where can quality hives be bought at an affordable cost?

Kind regards,
